• On occasion when I’m out of state I will review antique shops for those of you who may be visiting the same location.
RENO, NV — There are many things you can do during inclement weather when traveling. During a recent visit to our daughter here, we avoided 100+ temperatures for a while by visiting northern Nevda’s largest antique mall.
Peggy and Hank Tavener own The Virginia Street Antique Mall which houses 90 dealers, working as a co-op.
Plan to spend some time here because you’ll notice not every antique shop or mall is the same everywhere. Yes, there are some of the usual collectables in lovely shape and books galore, but finding the unusual for us New Englanders and New Yorkers might be the nicest surprise.
With Nevada being relatively newly settled (Reno just celebrated its centennial several years ago), an amazing amount of Western and American Indian items are on display and for sale.
This particular mall also has a lot of World War II memorabilia, with an exceptional amount of flags, weapons and military insignia taken from German troops. I also came across quality vintage clothing, furniture, glassware, jewelery, lamps, a very large rack of deceptively real looking faux fur coats, pictures, dream catchers, bows and other genuine Native American items.
Many of the dealers have their wares displayed in a tableaux fashion which puts the items in a period setting.
